When Real becomes Real

Chang Yoong Chia is the one of the artists attracted my interest among the 50 artists from FT3. Soft-looking faces are stiched on the quilt that consists of white cloth and black string. But they are all dead people. My interest became stronger when i realize that they were not simply portraits.

Next, how do people react when someone dies? If he/she was family's or a friend, most people would show sad feelings. However, Yoong-chia stitch the portraits who he never knew, moreover, they are picked up randomly from the newspapers!

These people will remain stranger eternally. And these portraits will tell us not the feelings brought by death but the practical loss of existence.

One day someone disappears suddenly. How long do we need to get actually become conscious of sudden loss in everyday life? There will be differences as people's relationships with the deceased. In other wards, his work can be taking as the process and the attitude with which to accept reality in silence. And that continuous concern is the only way to chage the feeling into reality. So, what he calls "exorcize" might be the elusive reality in which he is faced.
